Motor Vehicle Accident / Whiplash FAQs
Do I need imaging for whiplash?
Whiplash is usually based on your medical history and a physical examination rather than on imaging alone. Because scans do not always show the soft-tissue changes associated with whiplash, normal imaging results don’t necessarily explain anything about your pain or movement limitations. That said, our team may recommend an X-ray, CT scan, or MRI if we suspect a fracture, spinal cord injury, nerve injury, or another serious condition, or if your symptoms don’t improve as expected.
Should I rest after a whiplash injury?
A short period of reduced activity may be appropriate when symptoms are severe, but we generally don’t recommend prolonged rest. Instead, gradually returning to comfortable daily movement can help maintain neck mobility, strength, and normal daily function. Our team can help you determine which movements are safe and develop a paced return-to-activity plan based on your symptoms and functional goals. If needed, we’ll also show you how to temporarily modify lifting, sports, prolonged sitting, or other activities that noticeably worsen your symptoms.
What happens during a physiotherapy assessment for a motor vehicle accident injury?
Your physiotherapist will ask about the collision, when your symptoms began, how they affect your sleep and daily activities, and whether you have experienced headaches, dizziness, numbness, weakness, or other neurological symptoms. The physical assessment may examine neck and shoulder movement, strength, balance, posture, joint function, sensation, and reflexes (when indicated), and your tolerance for everyday tasks. The findings are used to create an individualized rehabilitation plan and, if needed, refer you to another healthcare provider for further evaluation.
When can I return to work or driving after whiplash?
Returning to work or driving depends on your symptoms and the demands of the activity. Before driving, you should be able to turn your head sufficiently to check traffic and blind spots, control the vehicle safely, and concentrate without significant dizziness or medication-related drowsiness. A gradual or modified return to work may be appropriate if your job involves lifting, prolonged sitting, repeated head movements, or operating equipment. Your physiotherapist can assess these demands and recommend temporary modifications while your function improves.
Can physiotherapy help if my car accident symptoms interfere with sleep?
Yes. Neck pain, muscle tension, headaches, and difficulty finding a comfortable position can disrupt sleep after a motor vehicle accident. Our physiotherapists can identify movements and positions that aggravate your symptoms and recommend individualized strategies, such as appropriate pillow support, gentle mobility exercises, and activity modifications. Improving daytime movement and symptom management may also make sleep more comfortable
